This movement between the two sectors promotes personal and professional growth, facilitates knowledge exchange, and establishes scientific and corporate relationships. The program is open to researchers at all stages of their careers who are based in the UK, and its aims include enhancing knowledge exchange, supporting collaborative research between academia and industry, and promoting the value of science. The Industry Fellowship seeks to assist the researcher and their team in their career development, as well as encourage the establishment of collaborative links between academic and industrial organizations that may lead to long-term partnerships.

The Royal Society: A Brief Overview

The Royal Society, founded in 1660, is a highly esteemed learned society based in the UK with a global presence. Its main aim is to recognize and encourage scientific excellence, and to promote the development and application of science for the betterment of humanity. With a distinguished history, the Society has had some of the world's most celebrated scientists, including Newton, Darwin, Einstein, and Hawking, as its members. Today, it has a community of over 1,700 Fellows and Foreign Members worldwide, who have made remarkable contributions to science.

The Royal Society is actively involved in various activities to promote scientific progress, including publishing scientific journals, providing funding for research, organizing scientific conferences, and advising governments on scientific matters. Additionally, Society places great importance on diversity and inclusivity in science and seeks to engage young people in scientific research and innovation.

Scholarship Benefits:

The program provides financial support for the applicant's salary while on secondment. However, the employing organization is responsible for paying the national insurance and pension contributions. The program also offers a research expenses fund of up to £4,000 per year, which may be used to provide summer studentships. These studentships allow students to work on industrially relevant research projects under the award holder's guidance and in partnership with the host organization. At the end of their projects, students are invited to present their findings at the annual Industry Fellows Networking event hosted by the Royal Society.

The Royal Society can provide additional financial assistance to research fellows to cover care costs when attending conferences, collaborative research visits, or invited talks that are directly related to their fellowship. Such requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Awards can last for up to two years full-time, or up to four years pro-rata, meaning that a distinction could be held part-time for up to four years (e.g. 50% part-time) to allow fellows to maintain links with their employing institution more conveniently.

Requirements Criteria for Scholarship:

Individuals who hold a Ph.D. or possess a similar level of expertise in their field can be eligible to apply for this initiative.

Moreover, applicants must have a permanent position or an open-ended contract with a not-for-profit research organization, university or industry in the United Kingdom.
